I recently talked with Valerie Craven of Facilities Management about what we're seeing with return-to-office mandates — and the reality is stark. Employees have proven their productivity for five years. Now they're being asked to commute without a clear performance reason why. That's a tough sell.
Here's what's working: Hospitality-style amenities and services. Companies are turning offices into destinations worth the trip. Smart fridges with daily gourmet meals. Concierge services handling errands. Real support that saves employees time. The investment ranges from $5 to $75+ per employee monthly, depending on the level of service.
But employees are savvy. They spot gimmicks instantly. A ping pong table won't cut it anymore.
The truth? Convenience and support gets people on site — connection makes them stay. And the results show up in job acceptance rates, engagement metrics and how long people choose to be in the office.
